Negative Verb "To Be" Practice Quiz

Beginner - Elementary

Make the sentence negative. Use the negative forms of the verb to be (am not, isn't, aren't)

Rules:

Basic Structure:

  • Subject + "to be" (am/is/are) + not + rest of the sentence

Examples:

  • I am not tired.
  • She is not (isn't) happy.
  • They are not (aren't) going to the party.

Contractions:

  • It's common to use contractions in negative sentences with "to be":
    • am not = 'm not
    • is not = isn't
    • are not = aren't

Important Notes:

  • The negative form of "to be" always comes before the rest of the sentence.
  • Use "am not" with the pronoun "I."
  • Use "is not" (or "isn't") with singular subjects (he, she, it).
  • Use "are not" (or "aren't") with plural subjects (we, you, they).
